"Power To The People"

The official results came in Thursday for the Palestinian elections.

Abbas' progressive Fatah party won 43 seats in the 132-seat Parliament.

13 seats went to several smaller parties and independents.

The Iranian-backed terrorist Hamas group won 76 seats.

Hamas leader Mahmoud Zahar said his group would be willing to extend a year-old cease-fire with Israel but added that no one should expect Hamas to continue the peace negotiations that Fatah was engaged in.

"We have no peace process," Zahar said. "We are not going to mislead our people to tell them we are waiting, meeting, for a peace process that is nothing."

At his press conference, President Bush had this to say about it:

"I'm going to remind people (in his upcoming State of the Union Address next Tuesday, January 31) we live in historic times. And that we have a chance to make decisions today that will help shape the direction of events for years to come."
