Pro-American conservative Nicolas Sarkozy (above) defeats socialist rival and is elected president of France!

Who woulda thunk it?

(and a nice compensating readjustment for the November '06 midterms here and the resulting leftward-tilt of the American Congress it is)

The last few years, France has literally been a hostage to its government subsidized population. I don't know about you, but I see this as the population of France saying "No More!" to lawlessness and rioting and gigantic public expenditures. Kind of reminds me of the Republican Revolution of the early 90's.

Now, like that revolution, this new government really has its hands full. France has a welfare system in place that makes ours pale in comparison.

They've also become aware of the multiplying Islamists in their midst who refuse to assimilate and who are aggressively trying to transform provinces in France into Al Andulises.
