They misinterpreted what was an anomalous fluke ('08) to be an ideological seachange in the American culture.
What we've been seeing is what economists would call a "market correction."
The "Yes We Can!" and "Hope & Change!" expansion was a delusive bubble that has popped.
But like Andrea Mitchell consoled after the loss of New Jersey and Virginia: "We'll always have NY-23!"
